Your best salespeople aren’t on your payroll. They’re your customers. A prospect will believe a peer who uses your product faster than they’ll believe your pitch deck. Yet most B2B companies treat customer advocacy as a favor they call in at the end of the quarter, not a strategy. That’s one of the biggest missed growth opportunities in SaaS.
People buy from people
B2B buyers are taking a risk. Their budget, their timeline and often their reputation ride on the decision. So before they sign, they want proof from someone like them: a leader at a similar company who had the same problem, made the same bet, and can tell them honestly how it went.
No ad, sequence or demo can do that. A customer can.
At RevRise, our experts have built customer marketing and advocacy programs at some of the biggest tech companies, as well as growth-stage companies, and the lesson has been the same at every company: authentic customer voice is a company’s strongest growth engine.
Why most companies leave it on the table
Most teams have happy customers. What they don’t have is a system for activating them. Sound familiar?
- The end-of-quarter scramble. Sales needs a reference by Friday, and someone starts emailing CSMs.
- The same three customers. Your most loyal advocates get asked again and again until they quietly stop saying yes.
- Stories stuck in people’s heads. Great results live in CSM notes and Slack threads, not in content buyers can see.
- No owner. Advocacy sits between marketing, sales and customer success, so nobody owns it.
Customer marketing & advocacy is more than reference calls
Customers can help you sell at every stage of the buyer journey, not just when a deal is about to close.

If advocacy only shows up at the decision stage, you’re using a fraction of what your customers can do.
How to get started in 30 days
You don’t need a big team or a perfect program to start. You need a few basics:
- Name an owner. One person accountable for customer marketing & advocacy across marketing, sales and customer success.
- Audit what you have. Gather every customer story, quote and reference you can find.
- Find your advocates. Work with sales and customer success to spot happy customers with strong adoption, a recent renewal or expansion, or great feedback. Aim for your first 15 to 20.
- Track every ask. A simple list of who your advocates are, what they’re great for, and when they were last asked. That one step ends most end-of-quarter scrambles.
- Launch one thing. A case study, a customer webinar, a reference process, or a small advisory board. Prove the value, then build on it.

Once the basics are in place, the question becomes how to scale without burning out your best customers. Next, we’ll cover how to tell where your program stands today, how to match the right ask to the right customer, and how to measure advocacy’s impact on pipeline and expansion.
